Annie Pearl Avery "I was so proud when I saw those lines at the polls." Annie Pearl Avery, of Birmingham, Alabama, worked on voter registration campaigns in Alabama and Mississippi during the early 1960s. She still lives and works in Birmingham. "I'm about a block from my polling place, and I can look out my window. I can look out my living room window and see the polling place, and see a line if there's a line. When I got up that morning I looked out the window and I saw cars parked all over the place. I saw a line all around the corner. And I said, "this is what's supposed to happen."
